Capt. Chris Williamson |

What is scalloping?

Scalloping is often described as an underwater treasure hunt. Guests snorkel in shallow grass flats searching for bay scallops, which are then hand-collected and kept for eating. It’s one of the most fun and family-friendly activities on Florida’s Forgotten Coast.

When is scalloping season?

Scalloping is a summer-only fishery with specific seasonal dates depending on location:

  • Wakulla County (St. Marks): July 1 – September 24
  • Gulf County (Port St. Joe): August 16 – September 24
  • Taylor County (Keaton Beach & Steinhatchee): June 15 - Labor Day

This limited window makes scalloping one of the most popular seasonal trips we offer.

How long are scalloping trips?

Williamson Outfitters offers two primary trip options:

Both trips provide plenty of time to locate productive grass flats and fill your limit, with the 6-hour option allowing for more exploration and a relaxed pace.

How many people can go?

Each boat accommodates up to 6 people, making scalloping ideal for:

  • Families
  • Groups of friends
  • Corporate outings

Multiple boats are available for larger groups, allowing everyone to experience the trip together.

What’s included in a scalloping charter?

Your trip includes everything needed for a successful day on the water:

  • USCG-licensed captain and guide
  • Fishing license coverage
  • Dive masks, snorkels, and fins
  • Gloves and dip nets

If you prefer, you’re welcome to bring your own gear.

What should we bring?

To make the most of your trip, we recommend bringing:

  • Food and drinks
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A cooler for your scallops
  • Any personal snorkeling gear (optional)
  • Motion sickness medication if needed

You’ll be fishing close to shore—typically within a few miles—so conditions are generally calm.

What are the scallop limits?

Florida regulations allow:

  • Per person: 2 gallons whole (in shell) or 1 pint of meat
  • Per vessel: 10 gallons whole or ½ gallon of meat

Your captain will ensure your group stays within all legal limits.

Do you clean the scallops?

Scallop cleaning is not included with the trip. However, your guide will show you how to clean them, and many groups enjoy the process as part of the overall experience.

Is scalloping good for beginners?

Absolutely. Scalloping is one of the easiest and most enjoyable activities on the water:

  • No fishing experience required
  • Shallow water (typically 3–6 feet)
  • Great for kids and adults alike

If you can swim and snorkel, you can scallop.

Where do scalloping trips take place?

Trips are conducted in the shallow grass flats of Florida’s Forgotten Coast, including:

  • St. Marks / Wakulla County
  • Port St. Joe / Gulf County
  • Keaton Beach / Taylor County

These areas are known for clean water, healthy seagrass beds, and strong scallop populations.

Why choose a guided scalloping charter?

While scalloping can be done on your own, going with an experienced guide offers major advantages:

  • Access to productive, less-pressured areas
  • Local knowledge of tides and conditions
  • No need to bring or buy gear
  • Safe and efficient experience for your group

It allows you to spend more time finding scallops and less time figuring it out.

How do I book a scalloping trip?

To reserve your date, a $200 deposit is required, with the remaining balance due the day of the trip. Call or text 850-251-8650 or visit FloridaDucks.com to book.
