Hog Hunting with Williamson Outfitters
Hog hunting with Williamson Outfitters is one of the most action-packed and hands-on hunting experiences you can have on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. From running dogs in remote marshland to close-range encounters with wild hogs, this is a true Old Florida hunt built around adrenaline, teamwork, and tradition.
⚠️ CAUTIONARY NOTICE: Please be advised that our hog hunts take place on public land in the Florida Panhandle and can be physically demanding. Hunters should be prepared to navigate thick vegetation, uneven terrain, mud, and swampy conditions.
Wildlife encounters are possible and may include venomous snakes, alligators, spiders, and other native species. Additionally, wild hogs are powerful, unpredictable animals and can pose a serious risk when wounded or approached at close range.
Participants should be in good physical condition, wear appropriate protective clothing (boots, long pants, etc.), and follow all guide instructions at all times to ensure a safe and successful hunt.
What makes hog hunting with Williamson Outfitters unique?
This isn’t a stand or feeder hunt. Williamson Outfitters specializes in dog-driven hog hunting on public land, where trained dogs are used to track, bay, and catch wild hogs in thick Florida terrain.
Your hunt typically begins at sunrise as you travel by boat into remote Wildlife Management Areas (WMA’s) near Apalachicola. Once the dogs strike a scent, the action happens fast. Hunters move in on foot as the dogs either:
- Bay the hog (hold it in place), or
- Catch and hold the hog until you arrive
It’s an up-close, high-intensity experience that few hunts can match.
Where do hog hunts take place?
All Williamson Outfitters hog hunts take place on public land WMA’s near Apalachicola, Florida.
These areas offer:
- Vast, low-pressure hunting ground
- Remote access by boat
- Ideal habitat of swamp, marsh, and timber
Hunting public land adds an extra level of challenge and authenticity to the experience.
When is hog hunting season?
Because these hunts take place on WMA’s, season dates vary depending on the specific area and what other seasons are open.
In general:
- Hog hunting with dogs is allowed during many established hunting seasons on WMA’s
- Dates and regulations are set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (check our online calendar for current availability)
Your guide will ensure your hunt is scheduled during a legal and active season for the specific WMA being hunted.
Do I need a hunting license or permit?
Yes and No.
Because these hunts take place on public land WMA's, all participants are required to have WMA permit. However, Florida does not require a Florida Hunting License when hunting feral hogs. We still encourage everyone to purchase a FL Hunting License regardless because rules/laws can change unexpectantly. "Always better to be safe than sorry!"
If you’re coming from out of state, your guide can help point you in the right direction to get properly licensed before your hunt.
What can I expect during the hunt?
Expect a physically engaging, fast-paced hunt.
Once you reach the hunting area:
- Dogs are released to locate hogs
- Guides track and move in with hunters
- You’ll have the opportunity to harvest a hog or watch the action unfold
In good conditions, it’s common to bay or encounter multiple hogs in a single hunt, providing multiple opportunities.
How are hogs harvested?
Depending on the season and regulations, hogs are typically harvested by:
- Firearm (when legal for the season)
- Knife or Spear (when dogs have the hog caught and controlled)
Your guide will ensure all harvest methods are compliant with current WMA regulations and safely executed.
Do I need hunting experience?
No experience is required.
These hunts are fully guided and designed for:
- First-time & experienced hunters in good physical condition
- Groups looking for a unique, action-packed trip
Your guide will provide instruction, positioning, and safety guidance throughout the hunt.
What should I wear and bring?
Hog hunting on WMA’s means rough terrain and wet conditions. Recommended gear includes:
- Hip or chest waders
- Old boots or lace-up shoes
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Snake gaiters
Expect mud, water, thick brush, critters that bite, and a true backcountry environment!
How many hogs will we see?
Hog hunting on public land is a true fair-chase experience, so there are no guarantees.
However, in favorable conditions, it’s common to:
- Locate multiple hogs
- Have several opportunities during a single hunt
Success depends on weather, pressure, and hog movement.
What happens after the hunt?
If you harvest a hog:
- The meat can be kept and processed
- Wild hog is excellent table fare
Your guide can provide recommendations for handling and processing your harvest (see health precautions below).
What does it cost to book a hog hunt?
- $750 per hunt
- $250 deposit required to secure your date
Deposits are non-refundable but may be rescheduled due to weather or conditions.
Why hunt hogs on public land?
Hunting WMA’s offers a more authentic and rewarding experience:
- True fair-chase hunting
- Less predictable, more exciting encounters
- Access to large, wild tracts of land
- A deeper connection to traditional hunting methods
It’s hunting in its purest form, Old Florida style!
Are there any health precautions when handling wild hogs?
Yes. Wild hogs can carry diseases and parasites that may be transmitted to humans through contact with blood, tissue, or bodily fluids. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends the following precautions:
- Wear gloves when field dressing or handling hogs
- Avoid contact with blood or raw meat on open cuts or wounds
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling animals
- Cook all wild pork thoroughly to a safe internal temperature
- Avoid consuming undercooked meat
Your guide will reinforce safe handling practices in the field to ensure a safe and responsible experience.
